Why do murderers like creepy houses?

The three of us approach with slow wariness toward the decrepit, boarded-up farmhouse at the address Vasilios had been given.

Dragons might be tough, but stupidity can kill just about anything.

Arrogantly strolling inside a place we know jack about is like ringing the doorbell to hell and asking if there is any vacancy.

Nope.

I seriously hate places like this. Xerxes must feel worse, his magic shouting out to him with the half century of memories, mouldering here. The saddest, darkest tales are the ones that stain the deepest.

Murder is definitely the kind of stain that will never come clean.

Titan has been telling the Alpha Force for years, they are missing out by excluding purely non-physical magic from their ranks.

What Xerxes can pick up in minutes would be weeks of forensics work—if they are even looking at the right place. Miss one physical clue and forensics is in the dark.

“You good, Zee?” I ask him, even though I am feeling chilled myself.

I can zap myself and them out of here in seconds. Thankfully, the teleport earlier was less of a drain on my power than I anticipated. Probably because I share blood and magic with my twins.

“Fucking serial killers give me the creeps,” Xerxes says, proving he feels the same trepidation as me.

“This asshole is in Li Qiang’s head, hurting him,” Vasilios reminds us.

“Fuck,” Xerxes curses again. He does not need to be creative to get his point across.

“You better start recording,” I tell Vasilios. “I have a feeling this is going to be a bad one.”

We learned a while ago to always record when we go over a crime scene for the first time.

Unlike forensics, who take their evidence with them at the end of the day to study in their labs, everything Xerxes finds is in his head.

By recording, we are able to keep visual and audio evidence to guide our investigation later.

Xerxes is not much of a showman. We try to prompt him to tell us what he is seeing with his magic, out loud, by talking our way through the scene as we walk through it as well.

Vasilios takes out our audiovisual equipment, which is a tricked out sports camera.

I snap on a pair of gloves and take the lead, walking the unkept pathway full of weeds and rocks leading towards the front porch.

Xerxes stays in the middle. He can easily get lost in this own mind when he uses his powers, overlapping reality with the past.

Besides the usual hazards of tripping or walking into something accidentally, he is also incredibly vulnerable to attack.

We never investigate a scene with less than two of us accompanying Xerxes. Being born triplets is pretty much perfect for this kind of work.

I unlock the padlock to the door—hardly necessary in my opinion—per Xerxes’ perfect recall.

The door opens without a squeak, surprisingly. Everything is dark inside. We were warned there is no electricity.

Vasilios clicks on a flashlight. I fish my own from my pocket and head inside of the house.
